Great Barrier Reef - Natural Attractions

Natural attractions in Cairns and  Far North Queensland Australia

Natural attractions abound in Far North Queensland. Naturally you will want to see most, if not all, that Cairns, Kuranda, Port Douglas, The Tablelands and all stops in between have to offer. From crater lakes, raging rivers, tranquil crystal clear running streams, the wet tropics rainforest, and of course the Great Barrier Reef.

Craters LakesThe crater lakes district - on route to the Atherton Tablelands is the glorious crater lakes district of Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham. Remains of once active volcanoes, they now serve as a peaceful and lush haven for visitors. Scientists believe the lakes were formed about 12,000 years ago when molten hot magma rose inside the earth and heated the water table, creating super-heated steam trapped underground. 12000 years later we can enjoy the aftermath of those violent eruptions, with crystal clear water and jungle surrounds, you'd think you were in heaven. Take a hire car or organized tour and spend the day surveying these lush surrounds.

The Great Barrier Reef - Of course this is why you want to come and visit our great region. The barrier reef has much to offer the visitor. Depart Cairns, From day cruises, Island hideaways, snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, whatever you can think of doing on the water (legally that is :-) you can do right here in our place. The colours of the reef have to be seen to be believed, colours you never thought existed are right there for you to discover.  Marine life is abundant, with literally thousands of species of marine life to discover. There are some things you should know before venturing into the waters of the reef though and you can find more information on some of the dangerous marine life here. As they say, fore warned is to be fore armed.

The Wet Tropics Rainforest - Green, lush, jungle, cool, eerily beautiful and unique. However you describe our World Heritage listed rainforests, nothing is quite like being there. The jungles of the Atherton tableland and Daintree area are simply magnificent. With trees that seem to go forever into the skies, when viewing them from the floor of the rainforest. On the ground and up in the trees is teaming with wild life butterflies and rare flora. The best way to see it is by taking a guided tour offered by one of the specialist operators in Port Douglas. You can find  more information on the Wet Tropics Rainforest .
